The adult modeling industry is far different than the fashion modeling counterpart, in terms of not only the actual work the model does, but also the types of marketing needed to get that model jobs. In the world of fashion modeling, a model has little chance of succeeding on her own without having numerous industry connections, not the least of which are familiar fashion show producers, clothing designers and merchandisers. But in the adult modeling industry, models and performers frequently freelance due to the perceived effectiveness of self marketing and getting jobs. In actuality though, the adult model or performer needs an agency, manager or professional representation as much as their counterparts in the fashion industry.
Adult models and performers who freelance typically find work on classified or ad listing sites, and end up working what is called the job-to-job grind. Initially, this may seem like the proper way and possibly only way for the adult model to pursue this particular line of work. But ever, almost always sooner rather than later, it becomes apparent to the performer that this method of managing one's career through ads and forums, working job-to-job to make money, has a very short shelf life.
Freelance adult entertainers are much more susceptible to getting ripped off, or worse yet, taken advantage of in a physical way. In the minds of some photographers or adult film producers and directors, a self-managing model is easier to trick or lie to when it comes to lining out the details of a job. And this same line of thinking sometimes holds true when it comes to fulfilling the agreement of the job, compensation wise. This is one reason certain photographers and content producers would rather work with a non-represented model rather than one with agency or management backing.
But assuming a model or entertainer can live with the occasional deadbeat - which even with representation she will still encounter as it is pretty much a product of the industry - there is always the longevity aspect of her career that she should then be concerned about.
In the adult modeling industry, there is a small window of time for a model to work in and still be successful. If ever there was an industry where one should plan for the future and take the necessary steps to ensure maximum income at the moment as well as have a revenue stream in the future, it is in the adult modeling industry. In order to accomplish this though, it requires the knowledge and tools to create a recognizable brand and reach a broad audience. Standard methods of self-marketing simply do not accomplish this. And for a model who is working and living her life, taking on this other aspect of the business is often times a burden.
An adult modeling agency or management company can see the forest beyond the trees, and project a long term plan for their client that will incorporated multiple revenue streams. The reasoning for this type of thinking is simple: the more money the client makes, the more money the agency or manager makes. As a model or performer, it would only make sense to have the backing of someone who is critically tied to your financial, physical and emotional well-being. And because this company or individual is so invested in your career, they will go the extra mile to ensure you are effectively marketed, and that your public persona is always golden, both of which are very important for immediate and long term success. So while freelancing may seem to save 15% to 20%, the reality is, it ends up costing far, far more.
