When you think of SEO, you're probably thinking of organic search strategies, or the methods you're using to increase your visibility in the search engine results pages (SERPs). Pay-per-click (PPC), on the other hand, is when you actually pay for that visibility. If you're considering the two as totally separate tactics, you might be missing out. Thinking of PPC and SEO as two components of the same campaign will help you coordinate your efforts and multiply your results with a cohesive strategy.

Search engine marketing is an all-encompassing term that includes both PPC and SEO tactics to improve your visibility across the web. A balance of the two is key to both short and long-term success with search engine marketing. The bottom line is that both PPC and SEO have the ultimate goal of converting visitors (either via click-through rate or conversion rate) and turning your audience into paying customers.

Without SEO, your PPC efforts could be a flop. Why? If your landing page isn't relevant to the ads you're displaying, your visitors will be hitting the road instead of forking over their hard-earned cash.

Keyword Research

One of the biggest things PPC and SEO share in common is the need to conduct comprehensive keyword research. The same keywords you're using to entice visitors to click on your ads could be the same keywords you want to use to improve your organic rankings on your site content and off-page SEO efforts-but not always.

PPC keywords should be high in search volume but low in competition for the ideal combination. Of course, that's not always achievable. Depending on your niche, the competition can get pretty heavy with some tough-to-beat websites occupying the first page of Google's SERPs.

Competitive Edge

Beating your competition at the SEO game, especially if your competitors have had a strong presence on the web for years, isn't an easy feat. It can be done, but it will take time. With PPC, on the other hand, it's possible to beat out your competitors fairly easily if you have enough cash to outbid them on your desired keywords. Cost isn't the only factor that comes into play, but it is a significant one.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term

SEO is a long-term strategy, and one that you want to sustain with consistent effort. PPC can be used as a short-term tactic to gain visibility on the front page of the SERPs before you've had time to ramp up your SEO campaign.

But PPC isn't only for the short-term benefit. Many businesses continue to use PPC for years and reap tremendous benefits. The key is to find the sweet spot where your investment pays off in terms of ROI-in which case, it doesn't make sense to not do it. If you could spend $500 per month for a guaranteed $5,000 payoff, would you do it?

Given the similarities between the approach and the complimentary short-term and long-term benefits, many businesses opt for a multi-channel approach, focusing efforts on both SEO and PPC to ensure their site's viability over time.

It doesn't just end there. The exposure you get from your PPC campaign-brand awareness, paying customers and repeat business-can actually boost your SEO. Things like repeat visitors, backlinks, social mentions, positive online reviews and social followers all remain important factors for Google in determining which websites hold the most value.

Meshing the Two: A Cohesive Strategy

The best way to approach it is to think of PPC and SEO as a single, comprehensive campaign that has two different avenues. When you consider both approaches during the strategy planning phase, you'll be more likely to consider how the two will compliment one another when actual visitors are viewing or clicking your ads and reaching your landing pages.

When you're thinking about the terms visitors looking for your products and services are likely to enter, you should also consider what information would be most compelling once they reach a promising web page.

• What information can you display that's most relevant to the search query?

• What data will convince your prospects to click the "buy now" button?

• Does the landing page directly relate to the ad copy that led the visitor to it?

• Are your headlines clear and captivating?

• Does your landing page link out to related areas of your site that will provide more detailed information?

The great thing about all these considerations is that if you plan your landing page and site copy to compliment your PPC campaign, you're already going to appeal to the search engines without even really trying. When you answer these questions, you're writing for the reader-not the search engine. That means you'll have high-quality content that's both meaningful and relevant, which is exactly what Google is looking for today. Balancing the two components of search engine marketing, you'll make your life easier and reap handsome rewards while you're at it.

Everyone wants something free. Well probably the best thing you could get for free that has some value is an Education. Now thanks to the internet everyone can get a free University education - in just about any discipline you like. However do not expect an accreditation.

Ever hear the expression: "Nothing in Life is Free"? Or, "You get what you pay for?" The trouble with trite expressions is people start to believe them - simply because they are easy to remember. That does not imbue them with verisimilitude. Far from it. The masses swallow what is shoveled down their throat. None the less - it is possible to pick up a lot of valuable items for Free if one searches for them.

While there may be no financial outlay for free stuff the time it takes you to garner the material is what you must pay in order to get it. It is like digging for Free Gold. You buy the implements - pay for the transportation and then provide sweat labor digging in the ground to uncover your fortune.

When you go surfing it is sort of the same. You do not pay to get there - except you had to find the site. And then you need to click on the various links and follow them to see if they contain what you want. Note also - while the sites are mostly FREE and various people post their items there for FREE - you are not guaranteed anything from anyone for anybody. Why? Simply because you did not pay a dime for getting there.

Also you should know that the world if full of rogues - and if you are looking for free stuff then clearly there is opportunity for the miscreants to endeavor to take advantage of you and of our own Free Site. So beware of anything Free. Therefore please be warned and investigate all that glitters - as it may in fact not be the gold you were expecting to find for free!

There is a plethora of resources from educational institutions such as MIT and Beverly Hills University. They provide free online courses including videos and pdf downloads. Well worth investigating. Do not be concerned about not getting accreditation as the days of the stuffy noses are quickly disappearing. What counts most in an education is "what you learn"!

AdSense is one of the best ways to monetize your web traffic. People see those little "Ads by Gooogle" tidbits and they click like crazy. Or at least that's the plan. But have you ever given though to where those ads are coming from? That would be AdWords, the Pay-Per-Click program for people who want to advertise their products on Google.

They are the fine men and women who are willing to part with some coin of the realm every time a visitor to your web site chooses to click on an AdSense ad. Google grabs the cash from the AdWords' member's account, keeps some of it for themselves, and gives the rest to you. How much they keep and how much give away is a State secret, but who cares; just as long as we're getting ours each month.

How AdWords Works

AdWords provides pay-per-click advertising to merchants who are willing to shell out anywhere from a minimum 05 .05 per click all the way up to a maximum of $100 per click. Can you imagine anyone paying $100 just to have someone click on an ad?

Anyway, the advertiser joins the AdWords program and gets a control panel similar to the one that we AdSense users get. They can write their ads, pick their keywords, and establish an advertising budget. They get tools to track performance as well as to help them pick keywords. There are no monthly minimum spends required and they can turn their ads on and off at will.

Once an advertiser is happy with their ad, it gets released to the network and shows up on web sites like yours and mine. That's if the keywords on your site match the keyword requirements of the brand spanking new ad, of course.

They can't "buy" their way to the top

Google doesn't simply push the people with the highest paying ads to the top of the SERP (Search Engine Results Page). They use a rather fair methodology that takes into consideration not only the maximum CPC (cost per click), but also includes a secret recipe for determining an ad's placement based upon the number of clicks the ad receives. So, at least in theory, an ad paying .05 per click could rise above one paying $5.00 per click if it's more popular with Google's audience.

I say "in theory" because if the owner of the $5 ad is paying attention then he or she will see that they are being bested by a lowly nickel ad and do some serious rewriting to get back up to the top where they belong.

Personally, I'm not sure that I have the guts to invest a lot of money into hoping that people who click on my ad will actually buy something, since I still have to pay Google whether I make a sale or not. But, as a dedicated AdSense user, I'm sure glad that my AdWords brothers and sisters have more nerve than I do. And you should be thankful as well.

Banner ads are online forms of advertising. They usually come in the form of flash, gif and jpg. Many companies use this form of advertising to advertise their products and services. When a person clicks on the banner they are taken to the URL of the advertiser. If you look at the top or side of a website then you will usually see a banner advertising something. People will pay a fee to have this banner placed on the website as it offers a number of advantages, and is a highly effective way to advertise a business. Many businesses use this form of advertising in order to build a brand, drive sales and launch new products.

From the dawn of affiliate marketing, webmasters were given a choice: PPC, PPS, Rev. Share (and even PPI¹). Now us webmasters (adult site or not) are looking for the golden choice, based on statistics or mere trial and error. Here are the cold hard statistics, so you do not have to go through trial and error.

First, a quick review of each type of affiliate service:

Pay per click is a fixed rate (often ranging from $0.01 to $0.03) of money per click by each unique visitor.

Pay per sale is a fixed amount of money for every purchase made when a visitor buys from that affiliate. This price ranges greatly depending on the affiliate, however an example amount is $25.00.

Revenue sharing is a recurring amount of money for affiliates that offer memberships. When a visitor from your site begins this membership, you receive a monthly percentage of their payments until their membership ends. This price ranges greatly depending on the affiliate, however an example amount is $20.00.

An experiment was conducted involving 1719 unique visitors with each affiliate program taken into consideration. Over a controlled period of time, PPC raked in $51.57, PPS raked in $75.00, and REVS raked in a whopping $269.55.

The golden choice? Revenue Sharing. This is because people who sign up for memberships stay for an average of 6 months, and with a recurring rate of money not far under one sale, it will consistently net in more money than PPC and PPS.

¹PPI: Pay Per Impression; this type of affiliate service was excluded from the article and experiment due to its unpopularity in modern day affiliates.

In the affiliate marketing business, getting your site's visitors to pay attention to the content of your website is just half the battle.

Getting them to click on the banner ads of your featured merchant is what often seals the deal for your commission.

For newbies in the internet marketing business, this might seem like too much work, hence the appeal of AdSense.

AdSense features numerous ads from different merchants and does not require you to exert as much effort in developing the banner ads.

The banner ads are automatically generated based on the type of activities featured on the website.

The end goal for AdSense is getting the most number of clicks in the advertising materials featured in the website because this will be the basis for your commission.

The challenge now for AdSense users is how to ensure that visitors to their websites click on the ads.

  1. Select your ads carefully. AdSense features multiple ad sizes to choose from, but not all will prove to be effective in enticing the visitor to click on the ad. The most productive ad types are the 160x600 (Wide Skyscraper), 300x250 (Medium rectangle), and the 336x280 (large rectangle).

  2. In the same way, ad placement is also vital for your campaign's performance. Positioning them in the spaces where visitors are automatically bound to look at increases the likelihood that they will click on the ad. For example, the human eye will always start reading from the left side so one of the recommended positions for the ad is at the top left of the page. The best possible placements are on the sidebar, just below the content above the comment box, at the top of the content below the title, and at the top left of the page. Mix and match the ad types featured in your site. AdSense offers you the option of putting up text-based ads, display ads or both, depending on your choice.

  3. What this does is it lets the text-based ads and the display ads alternate their appearance in the same ad position so you have a series of different ads that can be clicked by the user.

  4. Monitor your statistics in Google Analytics to see which pages / topics are generating more clicks so you can determine what your site visitors are more interested in seeing in your website.

  5. Less is more when it comes to banner ads since the perception that it will increase the likelihood of visitor clicks. At most, ads should be limited to 2 to 3 because more than that can disrupt the attention of your visitors and even lead them not to come back to your site.

Whether you chose to go through the AdSense or affiliate marketing route, one thing's for sure-the internet has made earning money a little bit more doable for people.
