Computer-generated blog comments can be annoying and bothersome. Working to review these website or blog's comments and determine, which have been posted by a computer or a "bot" can be time-consuming and tedious. Here is a way how to keep your website clean, without unwanted automatic comments.

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University created a test called a CAPTCHA to tell the different between comments posted by humans and those posted by a computer. CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart."

The most common type of CAPTCHA used features a series of letters and/or numbers that have been distorted in such a way that, although humans can clearly interpret them, computers cannot. The person is then asked to re-type the sequence. Computers attempting to post comments are unable to complete this task, thus effectively halting the posting process for them, while allowing humans to post with ease.

The WordPress Plugin SI CAPTCHA utilizes this innovation to prevent "bots" and computers from posting on your blog in order to advertise or spread a particular message, one which you may not (and probably do not) agree with. Using the SI CAPTCHA plugin is an easy way to set up a system that will effectively eliminate computer-created posts (or spam) without making those attempting to post legitimate comments jump through hoops.

SI CAPTCHA anti-spam not only protect your posts from unwanted comments, it also protects your website's registration form and login.

When one of your blog readers come to your site and attempts to leave a comment, they will be asked to repeat a string of letters and/or numbers into a box on the page. These letters and/or numbers will be marked nearby in an image that cannot be copied and pasted. The image will feature randomly generated text so that each new entry will require a different CAPTCHA input.

Three levels of complexity are available for images so that you can control just how difficult it is for bots to post on your site. You can even choose between alphabetic or numeric images, if you have a preference. Implementation of SI CAPTCHA only requires the addition of a single line to your view, so you can be catching bots in no time!

Only humans will be able to complete the task or re-posting the CAPTCHA, so spam created by bots will be eliminated from your blog entirely, freeing up all that extra time you used to spend searching for and removing spam comments.

So even though it has been reported that up to 80% of all comments made (or attempted to be made) on blogs are spam, you will no longer have to worry about spam comments being present on your WordPress blog because you use the simple and effective SI CAPTCHA plugin.
